There are many reasons to use cloth diapers. First, the economic reasons- the average child will use about 8 diapers a day at a cost of .20 per diaper, over 3 years (average time to potty train) you will have spent $1752 in diapers, per child. If you chose to use brand name disposable diapers, this cost will be even higher.
The second reason to use cloth diapers is that they are environmentally sound. Disposable diapers can take up to 500 years to decompose. Each child in disposables will produce one to two tons of waste per year in diapers alone!
There are also health benefits to cloth. Most disposable diapers use an absorbent gel that can produce dioxins which are thought to have adverse health effects. Cloth diapered children also tend to potty train earlier. Many moms switch to cloth after their child has diaper rashes or other reactions to the commonly purchased disposable diapers.
Less exposure to chemicals in disposable diapers, faster potty training- what’s not to love?
Lastly, the best reason to use cloth diapers is to prevent the breast fed baby poo “blow outs” (the ones that go up their back) are a thing of the past. No matter which option you chose, the sewn in elastics do a great job of keeping the poo where it belongs (in the diaper, not in the clothes).
