There seems to be a great deal of confusion about which size to get after the infant/newborn stage, so this is an attempt to make it easier to understand. This is limited to the standard sizes we normally stock, not the unusual or odd-ball sizes we have gotten in seconds diapers.
Most babies outgrow the width of a diaper size before the length. So, when the infant diaper seems too snug to snappi, you have a choice to make. Some moms choose to size up or use pins or trifold. Pins do not require as much fabric overlap to work properly.
SO... After infants- where to go? The Regular, Premium and Capri are all essentially the same width. They vary by batch, but expect about 12.5-13 inches width, more or less depending on how much you’re pulling it straight when you measure or if measuring at rest. Our measurements are with slight straightening. If you measure your baby and the width of your baby is about the width of the diaper, you will find it too small. Even average sized babies based on growth charts may have a tight fit with these sizes when snappi’d. If uncertain, measure your baby before purchasing.
Toddler prefolds offer a greater width but will seem huge on a 4 month old, you could consider trimming them to a length more suitable to a small baby. Once babies start moving a lot and especially walking, they will thin out and you will find the Capri/Regular/Premiums have a less snug fit.
The difference between the regular and premium is the regular is thinner. They are the same dimensions. The difference between the Capri and Premium is that the Capri is shorter- the excess length on the Premium diapers added significant bulk, particularly when trifolding, so after years of trimming diapers, we have them sewn shorter and they are now available on an instock basis.
